Looking for a Mozilla Hubs alternative? Build 3D worlds in your browser

Mozilla shut Hubs down in May 2024. The classrooms, meetups, and rooms its community built went dark with it, and self-hosting was the only door left.

But Hubs was right about the big thing: a world should open from a link in the browser. That idea did not die with the servers. It just needed a new home.

anitya runs in your browser. There is nothing to install, and visitors can play from a link without an account.

What you had. What it becomes.

This is not a feature checklist written by marketing. It is an honest map from the things Hubs did well to how they work in anitya.

In Mozilla Hubs In anitya
Building scenes in Spoke, object by object, then publishing them to your rooms. Describe your world in words and watch it appear, then refine it with drag and drop. Spoke's spirit, without the patience it demanded.
Rooms that opened from a link in the browser, on any device. The idea Hubs got right first. You do not have to give that up. Every anitya World is a link too. It opens in the browser on desktop, phone, and VR, and visitors do not need an account.
Scenes and avatars built on glTF, the open 3D format. Your GLB files load straight in. Hubs and anitya speak the same format, so the models you made for Spoke are not orphaned. Import them and rebuild the room around them.
After the shutdown: Community Edition, if you are willing to run your own server. No server to run and no stack to maintain. anitya is hosted, kept online, and improving weekly, so you can go back to building rooms instead of babysitting one.
Fully open source, self-hostable, and yours all the way down. Where Hubs was ahead: anitya is not self-hostable today, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can point to is the Creator Covenant, our public pledge of exit rights. Your worlds, your audience, and your name stay portable.

The question you are actually asking: will this one last?

You have every right to ask.

You have watched this movie more than once. AltspaceVR closed in 2023. Mozilla walked away from Hubs in 2024, even with a community that loved it. Rec Room shut down in June 2026 after 150 million players, and Spatial's creator platform is closing too.

If you have been burned before, skepticism is the sane response.

We will not insult you with a promise that nothing can ever change. Here is what we can tell you instead: anitya is built by the team behind Godot, the open source engine that has outlived nearly every platform on this page and only grown stronger for over a decade. You know exactly what that name means and what that track record says about how these people treat their community.

And it is written down. The Creator Covenant is our public pledge: your name travels with your work, you can leave any time and take your worlds, your audience, and your name with you, and the shared asset library is being moved into a creator-owned body separate from the company.

A platform you cannot leave is a cage that happens to be comfortable.

Built browser first, on purpose

Hubs proved something the rest of the industry is still catching up to: a world should open from a link, not an installer. anitya is built on the same conviction, all the way down. It is lighter to serve, instant to join, and the same link works on desktop, phone, and VR.

You will be early here. Early means rough edges sometimes, and it also means the people who arrive now shape what this becomes.

From nothing to a shared world in minutes

1. Prompt it

Type what you imagine, a classroom, a meetup space, or a rooftop at sunset, and watch anitya build it in front of you.

2. Refine it

If it needs a touch, drag, drop, move, and place. Import your own GLB models, the same glTF format Hubs spoke.

3. Publish it

Your World goes live in the feed, where people can scroll and step inside, and gets a link you can send anywhere. You need a free account to publish. Your visitors never need one.

Quick answers

What happened to Mozilla Hubs?

Mozilla discontinued Hubs on May 31, 2024. The hosted service closed, along with Spoke scenes and the demo servers. A Community Edition exists for self-hosting, but it asks you to become a sysadmin just to keep a room online.

Can I bring my Hubs scenes over?

There is no one-click import of a Hubs or Spoke scene, and we will not pretend otherwise. But Hubs was built on glTF and so is anitya's import. Your GLB models load straight in. Rebuild the room around them by hand, or prompt the space and refine it.

Is anitya free?

It is free to start. You can step into Worlds from a link without an account. Creating and publishing your own takes a free account.

Do I need a VR headset?

No. anitya is browser first. The same World link opens on desktop, phone, and VR.

Is anitya ready to use today?

Yes. anitya is live now in open beta and improving weekly. The beta tag means what it says: rough edges, actively being fixed. There is no relaunch to wait for. You can step into Worlds and build today, and arriving now means you are one of the first ones in.

You built once. Build again.

Your next world takes minutes to start, and it is one link away from your people.
