Looking for a Rec Room alternative? Build 3D worlds in your browser

Rec Room shut down on June 1, 2026. A decade, 150 million players, and then the servers went quiet.

If you spent years building and hanging out in there, that stings. But the magic was never the app. It was you, making places. And that part did not shut down.

Start building free

anitya runs in your browser. There is nothing to install, and visitors can play from a link without an account.

What you had. What it becomes.

This is not a feature checklist written by marketing. It is an honest map from the things Rec Room did well to how they work in anitya.

In Rec Room In anitya
Building rooms with the Maker Pen, then Rec Room Studio for the ambitious. Describe your world in words and watch it appear, then refine it with drag and drop. No code and no separate studio app.
Inviting friends into your room inside the app. Every World is a link. Anyone can step inside from the browser, and visitors do not need an account.
Apps for Quest, PlayStation, and phone, each with installs and updates. One link opens everywhere: desktop, phone, and VR, straight from the browser. Nothing to install.
Custom models required the Studio pipeline. Import your own 3D models. Blender works out of the box, alongside a growing asset library.
A decade of polish: full quest games, scripted experiences, and deep systems. Where Rec Room was ahead: anitya is younger. Interactions and game systems are growing every week, but Rec Room had ten years. We would rather tell you that straight than oversell you twice.

The question you are actually asking: will this one last?

You have every right to ask.

Rec Room raised over 294 million dollars, reached 150 million players, and still could not make the costs work. AltspaceVR closed in 2023. Mozilla walked away from Hubs in 2024.

If you have been burned before, skepticism is the sane response.

We will not insult you with a promise that nothing can ever change. Here is what we can tell you instead: anitya is built by the team behind Godot, the open source engine that has outlived nearly every platform on this page and only grown stronger for over a decade. Same people. Same philosophy: creation should not depend on one company's runway.

And it is written down. The Creator Covenant is our public pledge: your name travels with your work, you can leave any time and take your worlds, your audience, and your name with you, and the shared asset library is being moved into a creator-owned body separate from the company.

A platform you cannot leave is a cage that happens to be comfortable.

Built browser first, on purpose

Heavy native apps on every platform are part of what made social 3D so expensive to run. anitya lives in the browser. It is lighter to serve, instant to join, and the same link works on the devices you already own.

You will be early here. Early means rough edges sometimes, and it also means the people who arrive now shape what this becomes.

From nothing to a shared world in minutes

1. Prompt it

Type what you imagine, a hangout, an arena, or a rooftop at sunset, and watch anitya build it in front of you.

2. Refine it

If it needs a touch, drag, drop, move, and place. Import your own models if you have them.

3. Publish it

Your World goes live in the feed, where people can scroll and step inside, and gets a link you can send anywhere. You need a free account to publish. Your visitors never need one.

Quick answers

Is Rec Room really shut down?

Yes. Rec Room closed on June 1, 2026, after a decade and more than 150 million players. Logins ended, rec.net went offline, and the creator build servers closed.

Can I bring my Rec Room creations over?

There is no direct import from Rec Room, and we will not pretend otherwise. What you can do is rebuild fast: describe your room in words, refine it by hand, and import your own 3D models, for example from Blender.

Is anitya free?

It is free to start. You can step into Worlds from a link without an account. Creating and publishing your own takes a free account.

Do I need a VR headset?

No. anitya is browser first. The same World link opens on desktop, phone, and VR.

Is anitya ready to use today?

Yes. anitya is live now in open beta and improving weekly. The beta tag means what it says: rough edges, actively being fixed. There is no relaunch to wait for. You can step into Worlds and build today, and arriving now means you are one of the first ones in.

You built once. Build again.

Your next world takes minutes to start, and it is one link away from your people.
